How Cannes went down the pan

Empty champagne bottles are already stacking up on Saturday afternoon at Nikki Beach, an exclusive bar on Cannes seafront where Mariah Carey and Eva Longoria Parker dined the night before.

The alcohol's effect is all too evident as a crowd clad in garishly expensive designer clothes dances on the sand.

Suddenly, a blonde woman jumps on to a table and cheers erupt as her boyfriend sprays a £350 magnum of Piper Heidsieck champagne over her already see-through top. Onlookers whoop appreciatively as she writhes around wearing only a huge diamond Chanel pendant around her neck. Ogling men step forward to pour more champagne over her head and into her mouth while women flock round excitedly.

Can bamboo save our forests and help end poverty?

A shift toward more bamboo production by small scale farmers in Vietnam could reduce poverty and help circumvent worldwide demand for timber as a building material, writes Bryan Nelson from Ecoworldly, part of the Guardian Environment Network.

Due to its many benefits, bamboo has been touted as an environmental miracle crop. It's a significant carbon sink, it grows fast, is more termite-resistant than timber, and can be used for everything from food to clothing material to scaffolding for building construction.

I am not someone who reads random blogs. I have found the blogs I like to read, and stick to them. These include friends, some friends of friends, and some bloggers whose identities I don’t know but who I definitely want to be friends with. Then of course there’s that whole different category of ‘celebrity blogs’

The two celebrity bloggers I like to read are Shekhar Kapur and Anurag Kashyup. I like their style of writing. They not only have a way with words but they let their souls out through their pens. Celebrity blogs exist for various reasons. Most of them are self-promotion, film-promotion or settling scores with dushmans (and journos). Anurag talks about his films too on his blogs, but it’s not the usual boring stuff that directors dish out. Besides  he isn’t politically correct. As for Shekar, there are his thoughts on films, there’s philosophy, poetry and so on..
